The great British Brexit robbery: how our democracy was hijacked – The Observer

The observer has the story on its web site – see link above

‘A shadowy global operation involving big data, billionaire friends of Trump and the disparate forces of the Leave campaign influenced the result of the EU referendum. As Britain heads to the polls again, is our electoral process still fit for purpose?’

Read this and worry because there’s one hell of a lot to be worried about!

We have been manipulated by the printed media for generations but this new form of manipulation is far more dangerous and it is eating away at our very democratic structures and processes.

With thanks to both John and Tony for bring this to my attention

  1. Phil Holden says:

So it wasn’t just the old fogies voting leave after all then? And, as a remain voter, I’ve been feeling age persecuted ever since! Hmm, not sure about the case made in this article, Tony, and not just because many oldies don’t do Facebook. Yes data is mined and using data and social media isn’t new (no-one complained about lovable old Bernie Sanders trying it) but big data analysis is still very crude. It’s a remarkable claim that “The goal is to capture every single aspect of every voter’s information environment” . EVERY voter? EVERY aspect? I suspect some wealthy donors were well and truly taken in and have spent a lot of money for very little. I think there is a story about the way the biggest companies in the world (Facebook, Google etc) are trans-national and governments don’t even attempt to regulate them but I am sceptical about the specific claims in the article. But then I’m old and naïve, albeit paranoid enough not to tell Facebook my birthday…..
