The demise of our traditional high street bank branches is writ large in this notice recently placed outside Maghull’s RBS in Liverpool Road North.
Following the loss of Barclays, HSBC and Nat West from the Town how long will the RBS survive now its down to opening just 2 days per week?
News that Barclays Bank is to close its Maghull Branch will be a huge blow for people living and working in the southern part of Maghull.
I had the pleasure, in my year as Town Mayor, to declare Barclays first cash machine in Maghull open at this branch in 1994 when the Bank been refurbished and had a bright future. Indeed, I made the first withdrawal from the cash machine for my mayoral charity The Cancer Research Campaign.
Cash machines are now so common that a new one hardly raises an eyebrow but 20 years ago banks clearly made a big fuss about a new one opening especially when it was outside of a city/town centre.
From then to hearing of the proposed closure of the branch in 2014 is terrible news and I fear that there will be consequences for the business that surround the Bank at The Meadows shops. The Bank must be a draw in itself which the other businesses feed off.
