Brexiteers punish the BBC for helping them deliver Brexit!

There’s probably no one who is more despairing about the BBC’s news and current affairs output in recent years than me. Indeed, I’ve been calling this once great public service broadcaster the Brexit Broadcasting Company for the past 6 years as its obsession with Farage and his like was a significant reason, at least to my mind, for Brexit being delivered. Of course, Labour’s right-wing, working-class voters were the other significant reason.

Left of centre progressives, like me, have good reason to want the BBC to be reformed so that it can retake the ground it once held as a suburb and fearless public service broadcaster. BUT incredibly the very Brexiteer politicians who must have been cheering the BBC from the rooftops during its biased coverage of the now-infamous referendum and the lead up to it have turned on the BBC in an attempt to bring it to their right-wing political heal. Their reason; the BBC are too left-wing! What?????

The BBC needs to be an institution feared by all politicians as it is not there to cheerlead any of them but to hold them all to account. The government of the UK (any government) is not held to account at all well in my view and frankly neither are the opposition. How many times have you heard leading politicians say something on the TV news which is pretty much the opposite of what they’d said previously? It happens a lot but superficial news coverage often lets them get away with it. I get it with commercial news and current affairs stations as they’ll often only play with headline news items but it’s taken Channel 4 News to step up to be what the BBC used to be. I shudder to think how superficial UK news output, in general, would be without Channel 4 News, and you know it often hits home as politicians fear and even boycott it.

So why have the Brexiteers turned against the BBC? Well as Brexit has pretty much proved to be the economic and trading setback it was always likely to be and the BBC has been edging towards being critical of it the Brexiteers have taken the hump. Anything their ears find unacceptable is leftie nonsense; facts have no place in the mad world of the Brexiteers. And again Starmer’s lot find themselves compromised and fence-sitting as Labour knows only too well that if they look too anti-Brexit those right-wing, working-class, white voters will stick with the Tories. Trying to be anti-Tory but pro-Brexit and pro-right wing continues to dog Labour as it’s an unholy compromise position to be in.

So will the right-wing succeed in finishing off the BBC? Frankly, it depends on who is Johnson’s successor and how far they are prepared to go to shut down opposition in the UK. We are drifting towards an authoritarian state where the right to protest is curtailed. Control of the media to make it compliant is a path we are sadly already on and if like me, you fear politicians being able to direct the media then we have a lot to be concerned about………

Fracking – So do you think it’s a good idea? It’s really NOT!

Fracking is on our doorstep but how many folks really appreciate that and indeed the troubles that it could well cause in mid-Sefton and West Lancashire?

The process is advancing in Great Altcar, West Lancashire and at some point, subject to further permissions etc. a green light could be given to start fracking under our communities. Lydiate, Formby, Ince Blundell, Little Crosby, Hightown, Crosby, Little Altcar, Great Altcar, Maghull, Downholland are all within range for the process to take place below them.

But, have a look at this Channel 4 News video which details what has happened in Holland and then turn around and tell me, those of you who back fracking, that you are still happy for it to take place under your community.

You may want to consider backing the work of the Moss Alliance if you are not doing already, who are trying to fight off fracking locally:-

Lydiate Parish Council, on which I sit, has allocated £500 to assist the Moss Alliance in any legal battles they may fight as I have mentioned before on this blog site.

Brexit – Is the BBC weakening on its refusal to cover protests?

The BBC has the story on it Scotland web site page – see link above

I’m wondering if the BBC may finally be weakening in it pro-Brexit approach to news and current affairs coverage? To date, more or less since the EU Referendum, the BBC has been heavily biased in its reporting towards the pro-Brexit camp in my view. The number of Times Nigel Farage has appeared on Question Time has become a national embarrassment for our supposedly impartial national broadcaster to whom we all have to pay a license fee.

But pressure has been building on the BBC to set the record straight after months of its biased reporting – biased by it effectively ignoring any pro-EU/anti-Brexit events. So is this small step an acknowledgement of its sins even if only in Scotland? Would the BBC be brave enough to do similar in England where the Brexit dominated Tory and Labour Parties would surely attack it if it went back to being balanced in its reporting of Brexit?

That the once hugely respected BBC is in this position is desperately sad in itself but the reality is that BBC news is now probably 3rd or even 4th in terms of its reliability and impartiality behind Channel 4 News, Sky News and ITN. Who’d have thought it would come to this?

The Windrush Generation – Some of them are being treated appallingly

In recent times I see my country acting in ways that make me deeply ashamed of it and this is another sad and worrying example of us turning on our own people as the powers that be seek out scapegoats for our increasingly everyday racism.

Channel 4 has the story on its web site – see link above

What really gets me about this is that instead of regularising the paperwork each time one of these seemingly unregistered (and there could be 50,000 of them!) cases comes to the surface some of the poor people involved have been locked up. That’s no way to treat people we invited to our country no matter how or why the law was changed regarding them in 1971. They are British and should be helped to resolve any paperwork issues from generations ago without the need for them to be locked up and threatened with deportation.

If we can be so intolerant towards our own people what on earth does it show about how we are treating modern day refugees! What on earth are we coming to in Brexit Britain?

Gove and Boris savaged by Guardian

The Guardian has the story on its web site – see link above

This is a powerful piece indeed and well worth reading. My thanks to Roy Connell for spotting it.

As an aside I heard Anna Soubry MP say on Channel 4 News tonight that both her Tory Party and Labour had in effect stoked up anti EU feelings over issues that had nothing to do with the EU. She even mentioned that the Libs had not done this. Her anger with Gove and Boris was very clear.
