Southport – Crescent Road level crossing

Quote from the article – ‘A Merseyrail driver was forced to carry out an emergency stop on a train in a terrifying near miss when three people stood in the path of the oncoming train.

The driver of Merseyrail’s Hunts Cross to Southport service reported the “harrowing” incident shortly after 4.30pm on August 31.

As the service was passing through Birkdale, three people appeared from behind a passing train going in the other direction on the opposite track.’

Wow how stupid can people be?!

I was at this crossing recently and took these photos of a train passing by at speed:-

The Crescent Road level crossing is about half way between Birkdale and Hillside Stations so the trains are always going at some speed when the barriers are down to road traffic. Makes you wonder how this accident came about so the results of the accident investigation will make interesting reading.

Thank goodness no one was hurt.

Merseyrail – Labour-run Merseytravel Committee needs to be clear what they are looking for in terms of guards on new train fleet

I have blogged previously about the worrying potential loss of train guards once the new fleet of Merseyrail trains is introduced and agree with the RMT union campaign to keep train guards for passenger safety reasons.

My concern all along has been that Labour-run Merseytravel have been unwilling to say whether they are specifying guards on the new trains or not and it seems they are still unwilling to come off the political fence they have chosen to sit on.

This quote from the Echo article is telling:-

But a spokeswoman for the travel body said it could not reveal whether bidders to run the service were proposing driver-only trains or not, citing commercial confidentiality laws.

Surely it was up to Merseytravel to specify that it did want the new fleet of trains with a guard facility on them then all bidders to build the trains would have included such in their bids. Why has Merseytravel seemingly left this crucial decision in the hands of the train builders to decide? This smacks, to me at least, of the Transport Committee abdicating responsibility.

Folks I speak to want Merseyrail to retain guards on trains to aid safety. Women in particular are concerned about their removal. It seems many outside of the RMT union will be backing their campaign to keep the guards.

The big decision will be the one made by the Liverpool City Region and its Merseytravel Committee as they will specify whether the guards will stay or go.
