Better Days Ahead – Well there has to be surely

Above is a link to a most wonderful tune by jazz guitarist Norman Brown.

Hey things are more than a bit grim at present. The NHS is falling apart at the seams, the police are so under funded they struggle to protect us from crime, our schools are at breaking point with budget cuts, Northern would rather run buses than trains, Government is all at sea and their Official Opposition doesn’t seem to know how to oppose them. Trump keeps going bonkers, global warming is going to create a living hell for future generations and Brexit is going to see job losses, an economic downturn (yes we can keep going down!), less environmental protections…………. But you get my drift, as a progressive times have never been so tough – Thatcherism and Reaganomics were grim but we are are potentially on the road to far far worse.

So what do you do in the face of all this misery? You realise that there will be better days ahead as the electorate are sure to slam the brakes on whose they put in power and U-turn the political juggernaut away from the march towards fascism back to a progressive way forward. Well we’ve got to hope so because staying on the course the UK is presently on means a very poor outcome for us all but for the poor it does not bear thinking about!

But until May is put out of her misery and until Corbyn learns to oppose try listening to this tune by Norman Brown entitled Better Days Ahead, it will lift your weary soul…..

OXFAM – An opportunity the right can’t resist

That Oxfam staff have been involved in activities they should not have been seems to be a given but let’s not be taken in by the right wing propagandists who have latched onto these misdemeanors to attack a charity and indeed a charitable sector that often says and does things the right and the rich and powerful do not like.

There are politicians in UKIP, the Tories and indeed even in the Labour Party who want to reduce or even stop the UK’s foreign aid provision – they will undoubtedly also be Brexiters in the main who can’t see beyond their isolationist boundaries.

The Government should be supporting Oxfam to get its house back in order, instead it has let loose the hard Brexiters as attack dogs bolstered by more than a little savaging from the press.

As I have said time and time again, we live in very dangerous times where the official opposition is on the same page as our Bluekip/DUP Government over Brexit. This means that all kinds of hard won rights and government policies we should be proud of, such as helping countries that are in desperate need of help, are at huge risk as our very way of life is being unpicked before our eyes.

Yes some foreign aid is not well spent and yes some of it is siphoned off by despots but that’s not a reason to pull up the draw bridge and man the barricades of the White Cliff’s of Dover! It’s a reason to redouble our efforts to target foreign aid better. Anyone who supports reducing or stopping out foreign aid is simply asking for more refugee problems, more global conflict and more starvation pictures on our TV screens.

So when you hear politicians attack Oxfam just think for a moment why they are doing it because it is likely to be right wing populism, with sprinkling of Little Englander and a possibly a dose of fascism too.
