Wlitshire Council’s solar panels saving money – we have known this for years in Maghull & Lydiate

Solar panels to save £7,000 a year

Wiltshire Council has installed new solar panels on three council-owned buildings which it says will save £7,000 a year. The authority expects its annual energy bills to be reduced by £7,343 and the sites to generate £11,000 a year by selling energy back to the national grid.

BBC News recently carried this story.

But this is far from being new news as both Maghull Town Hall (run by Maghull Town Council) and Lydiate Village Centre (run by Lydiate Parish Council) have been generating both power and income in the thousands of £’s for the two Councils ever since the Lib Dems campaigned to have them to be installed.

Lib Dems take forward green policies; I could never imagine the now Labour-run Maghull Town Council installing solar panels.

Maghull Photography Club

If you have an interest in photography and may want to join a local club then Maghull has one of its own.

The club has a display case in Maghull Town Hall which it updates about once per month. I always try to have a look at the excellent work that is on display when I go to the Town Hall. This is the present display:-

You can find the display case next to the lift on the ground floor.

Out on the campaign trail – Boy it was cold (all our) yesterday(s)

Was out on the campaigning trail and leafleting over the weekend with my old chum Roy Connell.

It was a bitter cold but well worth the effort to fly the Lib Dem flag.

Bruce, Tom, Bill, Roy & John

Roy and I go back a long, long way and we speculated about how many times we had been out on the campaign trail together and how many leaflets we had delivered. The conclusion was that it must be hundreds of thousands – far too many to count. And this got me thinking…….

In the photo above, taken by me outside Maghull Town Hall @1992, Roy is the tall one second from the right. Like me and indeed our fellow Lib Dem campaigners in the shot (Bruce Hubbard, Tom Smith, Bill Chambers and John Sharman) we were all a lot younger then! Sadly, Tom has passed away since this photo was taken. Bill now lives in Spain I understand but Bruce and John, like Roy and I, are still about and both Bruce and John are stalwarts of Maghull and Aughton Rotary.

Maghull/Lydiate Labour – made up stories & misinformation in their upside down world

Labour leaflets in the Maghull & Lydiate area in recent times have been little more than bizarre with oft repeated stories that are utterly ridiculous and untrue.

Maghull Town Hall Roof repairs/refurbishment – It cost £500,000 say Labour – In the words of the independent Clerk to Maghull Town Council ‘The actual cost was £206,816.79’. Labour also say they had to take out a loan to pay for the work. No they did not, they had the option to take out a loan and they chose to do that.

Closure of Deyes Lane Post Office – Labour say it closed because of the Lib Dems. Utter nonsense, it closed because the Post Master retired and no one wanted to take over the Post Office in the Deyes Lane row of Shops. The only offer that the Post Office had was for a new Post Office which has now opened at the Moss Lane/Dodds Lane junction about half a mile away. I have a letter from the Post Office confirming the reasons for the closure.

Green Bin Tax – Labour say they rejected the Lib Dem green bin tax. We never proposed a green bin tax for Sefton; it was Labour who proposed it! We fought against Labour’s green bin tax and they eventually backed off.

Top Lib Dem resigns? – This is a Labour headline in their recent leaflets but no one knows who they are taking about. No top Lib Dem has resigned in Maghull and Lydiate. Labour seem to play this odd card in relation to Cllr. Andrew Blackburn but he was sat there large as life at a Maghull Town Council meeting only last week, which is more than you can say for 8 Labour councillors who have resigned in recent times!

Green Belt – Labour say we Lib Dems are biggest threat to it yet we are the ones fighting Labour’s plan to build on the Green Belt around Maghull & Lydiate! Labour started off saying they were going to defend the Green Belt but then they did a ‘U’ turn and decided to back building on it!

Maghull Parks – Labour says they are planning improvements to Maghull parks yet it was Labour-run Maghull Town Council who took the money for such improvements out of the Council’s budget! We Lib Dems opposed the money being removed.

Maghull’s Neighbourhood Plan – Labour claim all sorts about this but it is simply cover for them to build on the Green Belt and high grade agricultural land whilst trying to look like they are doing something else.

Policing cuts – Labour blame the Lib Dems for this yet it was Labour, whilst in Government who so ruined the UK’s finances with their spend, spend, spend mentality, that helped put us all in the mess that we are all in now. What’s more the closure proposals for Maghull Police Station are being put forward by the Labour Crime and Policing Commissioner for Merseyside.

You begin to wonder whether they have begun to believe all their own ridiculous propaganda!

Energy market poised for revolution? – What Councils can do and are doing.

The energy market is poised for a revolution as councils and social housing landlords across the country prepare to take on the Big Six providers by supplying their own electricity.

The Independent newspaper says that that local authorities across the UK are working on plans to set themselves up as electricity and gas retailers, with a promise to undercut the traditional suppliers. The paper states that councils are looking to cut at least £100 from the average dual-fuel bill of about £1,300 a year.

Last month, the independent supplier Ovo signed a deal with Plymouth Council that will allow the city to become the first in the UK to provide its residents with energy. It believes that as many as 1m customers could be served in the next few years by councils with the company’s help in setting up as energy providers. By 2020, it hopes that as many as 500 partnerships could be formed across the country.

This sounds interesting and innovative. On Merseyside/Liverpool City Region the joint local authority energy switching scheme, where a large group of energy users come together, can work well. I have used it and got a better deal on our household energy bills. See link below:-

On a smaller scale both Maghull & Lydiate Parish Councils have been doing their bit by installing large numbers of solar panels on the roof of Maghull Town Hall and Lydiate Village Centre respectively to generate power. Both were Lib Dem initiatives.

Maghull Wind Orchestra Fundraise for Woodlands Hospice

Maghull Wind Orchestra put on a concert at Maghull Town Hall on 28th October to help the Mayor of Maghull raise money for her charity Woodlands Hospice.

The concert was Halloween themed and many of those in this large and excellent orchestra dressed up for the occasion.

These photos are not particularly good as the light levels were very low but have a look at Phil their conductor dressed as a pumpkin! Cllr. Jen Robertson can also been seen with her cat ears amongst witches and a skeleton.
