200 year commemoration voyage flotilla arrives in Lydiate

Tonight saw canal barge Kennet and its flotilla arrive in Sefton Borough to moor at Mersey Motor Boat Club in Pilling Lane, Lydiate. It’s on a voyage from Leeds to Liverpool to commemorate the full opening of the Leeds Liverpool Canal 200 years ago. My previous recent postings refer.

Leeds Liverpool Canal By-Centenary – Maghull & Lydiate celebrations

Living on the Leeds Liverpool Canal gives Sheila and I a keen interest in the by-centenary of our local canal.

A group of people interested in promoting some celebrations around the 2016 by-centenary of the completion of the canal have come together in the Maghull, Lydiate and Sefton East Parishes area generally. Below seems to be what is being planned for at an early stage, so please note it could all change.

The actual by-centenary is in October 2016 but, I assume for better weather reasons, the local celebrations will be in June 2016 across 4 weekends.

1st Weekend – An event at Maghull Cricket Club’s ground one boundary of which is the canal itself.

2nd Weekend – A fun run

3rd Weekend – A flotilla of canal narrow boats, barges launches sailing down the canal

4th Weekend – A firework display

I am told that Maghull Town Council is going to put £3,000 in the pot to help fund the celebrations. I understand that Lydiate Parish Council will decide on its contribution at its January meeting.
